INTERPRETING SERVICES AND
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
"The interpreter scene prior to 1964 was so vastly different from that which exists today that it is a strain on the imagination to contemplate it ... We did not work as interpreters, but rather volunteered our services as our schedules permitted. If we received any compensation it was freely given and happily accepted, but not expected." - Lou Fant, RID biographer

Growing up in the Deaf Community has allow me to keep a finger on the pulse of the Deaf community to keep abreast of their needs.
To keep you abreast of the needs of the Deaf community, I invite Deaf mentors to assist me in teaching my programs it is the Deaf community that tells us what and how to meet their needs.
I was born on August 11, 1949
In Arkansas, where my mother was born and attended school at the Arkansas School for the Deaf in Little Rock.
Life was very different than it is today. It was considered normal to work in your parents candy store, or clothing store, or on a farm. We were there learning a business a job for the future.
My parents didn't own a store or a business. My dad was a butcher then later worked at Rockwell Areospace as a burrman.
My mother was a seamstress, she worked for White Stag, Catalina, and retired at the Goodwill Industries in Long Beach, CA.
I went everywhere with my mother and I communicated between her and hearing folks.
My mom would let her freinds without children, borrow me to interpret for them too.
As I see it, my family business was interpreting. One day when I was 17 my mother told me that interpreters were being paid, I couldn't beleive it, sounded really strange to me, getting paid to help your family and friends.
But it was true, I became certified and became a professional interpreter, because of my early years of training, thanks to my Deaf parents.
The Deaf community has been my family for over 68 years.
Love2ASL is here to share with you a Deaf heart that bares a lifetime of experiences and knowledge I have acquired growing up in with Deaf parents.
